Social Problem: The song Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the people discusses a young teen named Robert. Robert has a troubled home life with a dad who doesn't pay close enough attention to him. He also has a serious mental disease that leads him to the idea to shoot up his school. School shootings are not unusual today, and have began to make people rethink gun laws.

This song gives a powerful message that mental illness is very serious. During this song, you are put in the shoes of someone that has a severe mental illness and what something like this can lead people to do. Many have began to think if stricter gun laws should be put in place after this song came out, which tells you how powerful the message is. 

 

 

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting occurred on December 14, 2012, in Newton, Connecticut, when 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children aged between 6 and 7 years old, as well as six adult staff members. Prior to driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother at their Newtown home. As first responders arrived at the scene, Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The incident was the deadliest mass shooting at a high school or grade school in U.S. history. The shooting renewed debate about gun control in the U.S., including proposals for making the back-ground check universal. Connecticut State Attorney's office concluded that Lanza acted alone and planned his actions, but no evidence collected provided any indication as to why he did so, or why her targeted the school.

 

Lanza was diagnosed with many disorders that included sensory-integration disorder, Asperger syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and anorexia. All of these contributed to Lanza's decision to shoot Sandy Hook.

John McDonogh High School shooting. 18-year-old Steven Williams, and 17-year-old James Tate opened fire with an AK-47 and a handgun in the gymnasium of John McDonogh High School, killing a 15-year-old student and wounding three female students. Williams was sentenced to life imprisonment, and Tate was sentenced to fifteen years.

 

 

Obviously, school shootings have caused a great amount of pain within our country. People lose children, mothers, friends, and everything else in-between. Here are some statistics to prove it. 

• There were 372 mass shootings in the US in 2015, killing 475 people and wounding 1,870
• There were 64 school shootings in 2015, according to a dedicated campaign group set up in the wake of the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre in Connecticut in 2012. Those figures include occasions when a gun was fired but no-one was hurt.
• Twenty-four shootings — nearly one in six — occurred after a confrontation or verbal argument intensified, because of the presence of a gun rather than in spite of it.
• Of shootings perpetrated by minors at primary and secondary schools and for which the source of the firearm was known, more than half of the kids obtained the gun at home — likely because an adult did not store it locked and unloaded.

 

 

 

Sadly, this song still continues to show the ongoing issue of gun violence in schools today. Two students at a prom at Antigo High School were shot and injured by 18-year-old former student Jakob Wagner, on April 23rd, 2016. Wagner later exchanged fire with a school resource officer in the school's parking lot, and was captured after being shot and wounded by police. He died hours later in a hospital.

 

     

Here you see young students, mourning and terrified over the deaths of fellow classmates, 

teachers, and friends. 

I reentered the school from the front door, with Sgt. Carrio, we walked down the hall checking the front classrooms. In one classroom

I noticed a male lying on his right side in the fetal position. Someone yelled out that he was the suspected shooter. Someone behind

me stated that he had shot himself. The suspect had long, blondish, wispy hair and a very straight and pronounced jaw line. He appeared

to to be about nineteen years of age but seemed very small. He appeared to have the body size of a twelve-year old.  I noticed a black, Glock

automatic pistol about one foot away from the suspect's head. It was my belief at the time that he had shot himself with the weapon.

 

A Newtown police officer who responded to the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting described the grisly scene he found in the school on Dec. 14, 2012. The specific details prove that he was a well trained policeman.
